On March 7th 2025, the vibrant district of Catembe Incassane celebrated the inauguration of its first Girafateca, a solar-powered outdoor mini-library designed to bring access to reading, creativity, and community learning to children and families who have little or no access to such spaces.

Installed in partnership with the local cultural association MUODJO, and made possible through the generous support of GRINDROD Mozambique, this Girafateca offers an open, safe, and inspiring space for reading, games, and educational activities in the heart of Catembe, a district that, while still largely rural, is rapidly changing under the pressure of urban expansion from Maputo.

With a simple yet striking design, a MINITECA (repurposed fride into a mini library), a connecting box, and solar panels, the Girafateca invites children, youth and community members to gather, explore stories, and engage in collective learning under the open sky.

The inauguration brought together local leaders, artists, children, and families in a joyful celebration filled with music, performances, and of course, books!

This marks a new chapter for cultural and educational inclusion in Catembe. The Girafateca is open to everyone, and will be animated regularly by the teams of Chapateca and MUODJO, with reading circles, creative workshops and community-led activities.

1ª Conferência sobre Educação e Desenvolvimento da Primeira Infância nos PALOP

Maputo, 26 a 28 de março de 2025

Organizada pela Rede para o Desenvolvimento da Primeira Infância (RDPI), a conferência reuniu representantes governamentais, organizações da sociedade civil, especialistas e parceiros internacionais dos Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa (PALOP), para refletir sobre políticas públicas, estratégias e inovações no setor da educação e do desenvolvimento da primeira infância.

Com o tema "Educação em Contextos de Emergência", o encontro foi uma plataforma crucial para debater a importância de respostas educativas rápidas, inclusivas e adaptadas em situações de crise humanitária, mudanças climáticas, deslocamentos forçados e outras emergências que afetam milhares de crianças nos PALOP.

A conferência destacou a necessidade de abordagens flexíveis e centradas na criança, e foi uma excelente oportunidade para a Chapateca apresentar o seu modelo de biblioteca itinerante, que se desloca até comunidades remotas e vulneráveis, oferecendo acesso à leitura, ao jogo e ao conhecimento mesmo em contextos frágeis. A mobilidade, a leveza da estrutura e a possibilidade de adaptar os conteúdos às necessidades locais fazem da Chapateca uma resposta concreta, prática e relevante para promover a literacia e o bem-estar infantil em contextos de emergência.

O evento foi também um espaço de intercâmbio sobre temas cruciais como educação inclusiva, liderança, governação e financiamento no desenvolvimento da primeira infância, destacando a importância de uma abordagem integrada e colaborativa. Além disso, promoveu o trabalho em rede e a exposição de boas práticas entre os países participantes.

Este encontro representou um marco significativo na promoção de políticas públicas eficazes e sustentáveis para a primeira infância nos PALOP, reforçando o compromisso coletivo com o desenvolvimento integral das crianças nestes dias.

Inauguration of the KAYA PICO in Boane

Bringing Books and Sunshine to a Growing Community

On April 11th 2025, we proudly inaugurated the Kaya Pico Community Library, a refurbished shipping container transformed into a vibrant learning space at the Escola Comunitária El Shaddai in Gueguegue, Boane.

Home to over 230 primary and secondary students, the school now hosts a colorful library open to the entire community, thanks to a partnership between Chapateca and APC Moçambique, with the support of amazing national and international partners.

The launch gathered local leaders, families, children, and friends for a day of celebration filled with books, music, poetry, and powerful messages about the importance of reading and equal access to education.

Special book donations came from the Fundação Carlos Morgado, EUAM, RDPI and Vanessa Machiana, among others, a perfect start to building a rich collection for young readers in a community that previously had no access to a library.

Kaya Pico is more than a library, it’s a space of hope, creativity, and opportunity, bringing books where they’re needed most.
